Supply Chain Finance and Reverse Factoring: How It Works and When Factoring Fits Better

Approved payables finance (reverse factoring) pays suppliers early on buyer-approved invoices. See how it works, costs, vs factoring, and when Specie fits.

Supply Chain Finance and Reverse Factoring: How It Works and When Factoring Fits Better

Large buyers push for longer payment terms. Suppliers need cash closer to shipment. Approved payables finance, usually called reverse factoring or supply chain finance — funds that gap using the buyer’s credit, not the supplier’s standalone borrowing rate.

For importers, exporters, and finance teams: what the product is, how cash moves, how it differs from invoice factoring and dynamic discounting, what drives cost, and when to fund invoices outside a buyer program.

Specie (Untappd Labs Inc. DBA Specie) is not a bank and does not hold deposits. Payment services run through regulated ramping partners. Specie does not operate buyer SCF platforms. See How Does Specie Work?.

What approved payables finance is

The Global Supply Chain Finance Forum (GSCFF) — BAFT, FCI, ICC, ITFA, and the EBA — defines Payables Finance as a buyer-led programme where sellers can sell approved receivables to a finance provider and receive early payment, typically priced on the buyer’s credit. The buyer still owes the payable until maturity.

Term

Plain meaning

Payables finance / approved payables finance

Buyer-led early pay on invoices the buyer has approved

Reverse factoring

Common synonym; also used for a softer variant without a full buyer payment undertaking

Anchor buyer

The buyer that sets up the program

Finance provider

Bank or platform funder that pays the supplier early

Funding usually starts only after buyer approval, and pricing tracks the anchor’s credit. GSCFF also describes a softer variant without an unconditional, irrevocable buyer payment undertaking. Read the legal docs; the slide title is not the structure. See also PrimeRevenue, Taulia, and C2FO.

How the cash moves

  1. Buyer sets up a program with one or more finance providers and agrees to pay approved invoices at maturity.

  2. Suppliers onboard (KYC/AML and a receivables purchase agreement). Joining is usually optional.

  3. Goods or services ship on open-account terms (Net 30/60/90 or similar).

  4. Buyer approves the invoice (the funding trigger).

  5. Supplier elects early pay or waits. GSCFF notes that “100%” financing less a financing discount is the norm.

  6. Finance provider pays the supplier. Cross-border sellers still price FX and payout speed (transfer costs).

  7. Buyer pays the finance provider at maturity. Dilutions are usually handled outside the funded structure.

Best when

A large buyer invites you

Many buyers, or no SCF seat

Invoice factoring stays supplier-controlled. You generally cannot fund the same invoice in a buyer SCF program and with an independent factor.

What it costs

There is no single world price. Treat published bands as orientation, then read your rate card.

In classic reverse factoring, the supplier usually pays the early-payment discount when they elect early pay. The buyer pays for setup, platform fees, and fast approval. Dynamic discounting flips this: the buyer uses its own cash and keeps the discount as a return (Taulia).

Rate drivers: buyer credit quality, days from funding to maturity, currency and country, program structure, and invoice quality (disputes and slow approval erase a cheap headline rate).

Secondary CFO guides sometimes place strong-anchor SCF early-pay costs in a low single-digit annualized band (often roughly 2–6% annualized). Independent factoring is often higher on an annualized basis. Those figures are not a global tariff and not Specie pricing. Convert every discount to an annualized view before you compare.

Illustrative only: a 0.4% discount for 40 days of acceleration is about 0.4% × (365/40) ≈ 3.7% annualized. Recalculate on the actual offer.

Dynamic discounting vs reverse factoring

Dynamic discounting

Reverse factoring / payables finance

Who funds early pay

Buyer’s own cash

Third-party finance provider

Buyer cash

Leaves earlier

Stays until maturity

Typical buyer motive

Earn yield on surplus cash

Support suppliers / extend terms without tying up cash

Many corporates run both and switch as cash positions change. Classic 2/10 net 30 is the older fixed-window cousin.

Strong buyer program invites you

No program, many buyers

Use open account when trust is strong, then decide whether insurance, SCF, or factoring sits on top. Use an LC when you need a bank payment undertaking and the ticket justifies the friction. Use buyer SCF when you are invited and the rate wins. Use invoice factoring when you need supplier-controlled funding across a book of buyers.

Risks and when to join vs fund independently

Suppliers: limited eligibility; concentration on one program; slow KYC or AP approval; FX and payout fees that erase the rate win; double-finance bans.

Buyers: IFRS disclosure for supplier finance arrangements is tighter. In May 2023 the IASB amended IAS 7 and IFRS 7, effective for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2024 (IFRS Foundation). Liability classification (trade payable vs borrowing) remains a substance judgment.

Join buyer SCF when you are invited, the all-in cost (including FX) beats your alternatives, approval is fast, and you accept concentration on that buyer’s calendar.

Use independent factoring when no program exists or you are ineligible, you sell to many mid-size buyers, you need cash before AP finishes approval, or you want payments and FX in the same workflow as receivables funding.

Practical stack: commercial terms → buyer SCF where a strong program is open → invoice factoring for the rest → settlement and FX that keep the financing gain (How Does Specie Work?).

How Specie fits

Specie moves money and helps manage receivables for trade businesses. It is not a buyer SCF platform, deposit bank, or reverse-factoring program sponsor.

Use Specie for payments and FX, and for international invoice factoring when a buyer SCF seat is unavailable or a poor fit. If a buyer already funds you cheaply through approved payables finance, use that program. Keep an independent path ready for everyone else.

Next Step

If a major buyer offers supply chain finance, compare the real rate card, approval speed, and currency against your alternatives, and confirm you can still fund other customers outside the program.

Need cash across a wider buyer set, or payments and FX that keep the financing gain? Talk to Specie or get a quote for settlement and international invoice factoring.
